The university offers a wide range of excellent support services; don’t be afraid to take advantage of them. Here’s a few that past students have found particularly helpful.
- Life: If you are feeing stressed or distressed for any reason Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS, Michigan Union Rm 3100, 734-764-8312) offers a wide range of services, including individual counseling, discussion groups, and fast assistance with crisis situations.
- Health and safety: In addition to its medical clinic, the University Health Service (UHS 207 Fletcher St., 734-764-8320) offers other health services such as wellness coaching, anonymous HIV testing, and women’s health resources. The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC, Michigan Union, Rm 1551, 734-764-7771 or 734-936-3333 [24-hr.]) offers confidential crisis intervention and support.
- Academic: The Newnan Advising Center (1255 AH, 734-764-0332) offers LSA students a full range of advising services and can help you negotiate tricky situations, not just course planning; SOE students can visit the Office of Student Affairs; Engineering and Ross also have advising offices.
- Career: The Center for the Education of Women (330 E Liberty, 734-764-6005) offers excellent career counseling, regardless of gender. The UM Career Center and Alumni Association both offer career development services. LSA now has internship services and information through its new Opportunity Hub. For what it’s worth, I’ve also put together a small list of career resources for students in my professional writing classes.
- Writing: The Sweetland Center for Writing (1310 NQ, 734-764-0429) offers consulting for academic assignments with faculty through its Writing Workshop and peer consulting for any kind of writing through its Peer Writing Center.
